BMW’s mid-size luxury car, the 5-Series model was all new for the 2017 model year. The seventh-generation of this model is slightly longer and wider but in the same time lighter for more than 150 pounds than the previous generation. That is possible thanks to the modern chassis that shares some elements with the larger 7-Series but with out of the carbon fiber components. The new generation of the model debuted in two variants the 530i and 540i but for the 2018 model year, BMW is expanding the range with two new versions. Fans of the horsepower will love the M55i model equipped with the 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8. However, BMW is also expanding the range of its environment-friendly cars and new green version is the 2018 BMW 530e Plug-In Hybrid.
The new plug-in hybrid in BMW’s lineup also wears the iPerfomance badge and uses company’s eDrive system. The styling is elegant and interior richly appointed. There are also tons of advanced technology and luxury features.
2018 BMW 530e Plug-In Hybrid: Powertrain
The new 2018 BMW 530e Plug-In Hybrid uses the familiar eDrive system which is also found in brand’s other two sedans 3- and 7-Series as well as the X5 SUV. The gas-electric combination includes a 2.0-liter direct-injected and turbocharged inline-4 engine, electric motor and 9.2-kWh battery pack. There is also an 8-speed automatic transmission with the electric motor instead of the torque converter.
In this application, the combustion engine produces 180 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor contributes with 111 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Summary, the 530e has 248 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque at the disposal.
According to BMW, the 530e with the rear-wheel drive can hit 60 mph in 6.0 seconds. The time drops to 5.8 seconds with the xDrive all-wheel drive. The max speed is 146 mph.
The 9.2- kWh lithium-ion battery has the position under the rear seats which BMW says is in order to provide maximum trunk capacity and flat load floor.
As for the driving range, BMW promises 16 miles of the electric alone drive. The combined fuel economy is about 29 mpg. On the other hand, the battery can be recharged in less than three hours with the 7.2-kW charger.
2018 BMW 530e Plug-In Hybrid: Design
Visually, the 2018 BMW 530e Plug-In Hybrid is the elegant sedan with clean lines and traditional profile. The split kidney grille defines the front end alongside the elongated headlights. The full-width opening and chrome accents can be seen in the bumper area.
The profile has pronounced character line and subtly flared fenders. The model rides on standard 17-inch wheels. The rear features conventional trunk lid and the pair of exhaust pipes protruding from the rear bumper.
Inside the cabin, the 530e feature familiar BMW’s design language. The dash is trimmed with the wood and aluminum accents and the center display sits atop it. The instrument cluster provides useful information and transforms depending on the drive mode.
The model also has comfortable seats and premium upholstery. It also offers many of tech and safety features that are available in other 5-Series versions.
