The 2018 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is an interesting, tiny hatchback now available as the electric car only. This model can be the “smart” solution for the crowded city drive because of its ultra-maneuverability, small turning radius, easy parking and decent drive range. However, the model costs more than some models with four seats and has just a few modern safety features.
Smart redesigned this car for the 2016 model year and introduced petrol powered model. However, Mercedes, the owner of the Smart, has decided to ditch the gas version and from this version, all Smart ForTwo models will have the battery-electric powertrain. The model will come in two versions, the coupe and convertible. Smart will organize the equipment in three trims, the Pure, Passion, and Prime but will also offer many dealer options.
2018 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive: Performance, Mileage
The 2018 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is smoother and quieter than before as now all ForTwo models have the battery-electric setup. The three-cylinder engine and manual or automatic transmissions are not on the offer from this version. All ForTwo hatchback now provides instant torque from the rear-mounted electric motor which gets the power from the battery which sits under the passenger’s section.
The electric motor powers the rear wheels only with 80 hp and 118 pound-feet of torque. The torque is routed to the rear wheels through the single-speed gearbox. The battery takes the place under the passengers’ compartment and its position improves model’s center of gravity. It is 17.6-kWh lithium-ion pack expected to deliver the electric range of around 68 miles.
The battery will need about 2.5 hours for the full recharge with the 240-volt charging station. A 120-volt house plug will do the same job in 16.5 hours.
The model will hit 60 mph in 11.7 seconds, as Smart says. The maximum speed will be limited to 81 mph.
2018 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive: Design
2018 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive is based on the new-generation ForTWo platform that debuted with the redesigned gasoline version for the 2016 model year. The model has just 106.1 inches in length and impressive turning cycle of 22.8 inches.
The model comes in two forms, the two-door coupe and an alternative is the US sole soft-top electric cabrio. The fabric top operates at the push on the button and model also has removable roof bars.
Interior of the model looks modern and comes with the cloth or leather upholstery. Contrasting stitching and trim inserts are available in sever contrasting options.
All versions include power windows, LED running lights, automatic climate control, Bluetooth, etc. The Pure versions ride on the 15-inch wheels while the Passion has two-tone interior and power and heated mirrors. The Prime model boasts classic styling with silver accents and grille. This version also includes a rain sensor, heated seats, fog lights, etc. The Sport package is optional and brings 16-inch wheels, 8-speaker JBL sound system, etc.
For the safety of passengers, the model has stiff protection cell, eight airbags, rearview camera and Crosswind Assist.
