Honda has recently revealed the plan to electrify 65 percent of its vehicles including the light truck offerings by 2030 and company is already working on some models. In that context, the popular CR-V crossover SUV presented its hybrid version for the Chinese market at the Shanghai Motor Show. However, Honda also debuted the CR-V Hybrid prototype at the Frankfurt Show which is brand’s first hybrid SUV in Europe and should go on sale sometime in 2018. The European version will also get a 1.5-liter turbocharged CR-V but diesel won’t be on the offer. The question, of course, remains will Honda launch the 2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid for the US market?
Honda promised to reveal all details about the CR-V Hybrid in early 2018 and the model will go on sale in Europe later that year. But, Honda also mentioned that CR-V Hybrid is the logical step for the brand and promised also to reveal the US launch at later date. Considering that European prototype, as well as the Chinse market version, look very similar to the 2017 CR-V that debuted for the US market, the hybrid version should not be the surprise when it arrives as well.
2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid: Powertrain
Honda hasn’t revealed the details about the powertrain of its first Hybrid SUV but like the “Hybrid Prototype” for the Old Continent, the 2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid should use a similar setup as the Accord sedan called Intelligent Multi Mode Drive two-motor hybrid system. The setup includes a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine combined with the electric motor directly linked to the combustion engine. The other side of the system has the additional electric motor connected to the differential.
This configuration of the hybrid system allows three driving modes including EV, Hybrid and Engine Drive. Two first modes will provide low speed and urban ride while in the last mode, the model gets power from the combustion engine and the electric motor provides additional torque when needed. The combustion engine also has the role to powering the electric motor and recharging the battery.
The combined power and fuel economy this system would provide is still Honda’s secret. The application in the Accord sedan makes the total of 212 hp and provides 48 mpg combined fuel economy.
2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid: Design, Interior
Visually, like the recently redesigned US-spec CR-V, the CR-V Hybrid Prototype shares almost identical design language. Honda, however, made some changes that are in small details. The Hybrid version has LED strip used for the fog lights while the round units are installed on the US conventional version. The model will also get attention with the unique badging and trim detail. The design of the wheels should also distinguish the 2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid from the conventionally powered models.
Interior design won’t also stray from the current version. The difference will be in the trim details and hybrid-specific instrumentation. Honda will, of course, equip this model with the latest infotainment platform and standard suite of advanced safety systems.
2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid: Arrival, Price
The 2018 Honda CR-V Hybrid will probably go on sale in Europe in the first half of the next year. The US version will likely arrive later in the year. The price and other important details should appear in early 2018.
