BMW’s attractive, high-performance sports car, the i8 impresses with its appearance and track capability but also delivers impressive fuel economy in the same package. BMW introduced this plug-in hybrid super-car for the 2014 model year and the 2018 version will bring mid-cycle upgrade. Bavarian brand still hides details about the upgrades but it isn’t secret that brand will also add the Roadster version of this model. BMW released the teaser video and images of the 2018 BMW i8 Spyder and according to them the new i-version in brand’s lineup will inherit a lot from its coupe sibling.
This model will also share the running gear and technology with the hard-top version. However, both models will benefit from the performance, styling and tech upgrades that the mid-cycle upgrade brings for the i8 coupe version.
2018 BMW i8 Spyder: Design
The 2018 BMW i8 Spyder was already spotted while performing tests on the Nurburgring and BMW also released a teaser video of the disguised model. The model was fully covered with the camouflage and BMW also keeps all important details about the Roadster and refreshed coupe version.
However, spy and teaser images suggesting that i8 Spyder won’t differ much from the coupe sibling. But both models will benefit from the mid-cycle upgrades of the i8 coupe. What the first update brings are some subtle bumper tweaks, a pair of new front lighting units with new LED design. The Roadster comes based on the coupe version and will adopt the same upgrades but will, of course, get removable roof top. The roofless i8 will likely get simple fabric top that stows in the compartment behind the passengers.
As for the interior improvements, the mid-update should bring the latest iDrive infotainment system version. It will include the gesture control and new softer version. The new version of this high-tech car should also introduce some safety upgrades but more details about that and other improvements will emerge closer to model’s debut.
2018 BMW i8 Spyder: Performance
When it comes to the performance of the 2018 BMW i8 Spyder, it will rely on same power setup as the updated i8 coupe. Reports suggesting some chassis improvements for the updated i8 and plug-in hybrid powertrain is expected to gain more power and possibly the range boost.
The powertrain setup will remain like in the current version. A 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine will power the rear wheels while electric motor will motivate the front axle. The current version has the total output of 357 hp and torque of 420 lb-ft. According to some reports, the power bump of about 10 percent should be provided thanks to the upgraded turbocharger on the combustion engine, more powerful electric motor and improved exhaust system. These improvements could raise the total power to around 420 hp.
However, the models should also receive an upgraded battery technology like the i3 model. That could improve the current electric range of 15 miles significantly.
2018 BMW i8 Spyder: Arrival, Price
The refreshed i8 is expected in early 2018. The 2018 BMW i8 Spyder should join a few weeks after. How the updates will reflect on the price and what will be the price of the roofless version is still the mystery. The current i8 solds for $143, 400.
