Lately, we could witness the increased number in production of all-electric and fuel cell vehicles. And all the large companies are deciding to expand their lineup with zero-emission cars which are becoming more and more popular nowadays. This time, we are talking about the upcoming 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell. This luxury SUV should hit the market n a few years and it is expected to be one of the most practical cars in its segment.
The new Mercedes fuel-cell has recently debuted at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show and has shown many interesting upgrades. Compared to the standard version of the GLC model, the new F-Cell features unique exterior design. Under the hood, it has a unique powertrain too; precisely, it is the first fuel cell vehicle with a plug-in hybrid capability. On the other hand, inside the cabin, it will most likely be based on the standard GLC model but it will receive new and larger display on the center of the dash.
The new Mercedes will compete against Audi H-Tron and Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell.
2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell powertrain and performance
The new 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell will feature the unique engine under its hood. It will be powered with two electric motors, a lithium-ion battery of 13.8 kWh capacity and dual hydrogen tanks. These tanks can store around 9.7 pounds of hydrogen which provide the range of roughly 270 miles. The total output of this unit is around 200 horses and the torque of 258 pound-feet. The all-electric range is about 30 miles. So the total range of this powertrain (hydrogen plus battery pack) is 301 miles. The battery pack needs to recharge in about an hour and a half.
Exterior and interior design
When it comes to exterior, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell will visually differ from the standard model with unique and distinctive styling cues. The front end will receive the new design of the headlamps and new LED strip lighting. As well, it will feature restyled, more aerodynamic bumper, larger air intakes and revised grille. Furthermore, the GLC F-Cell will arrive with blue details on the grille, side skirts, wheels and rear bumper. It will receive a new design of the wheels too. Those will be the new 20-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels. Dimensionally, it will be 183.89 inches long, 82.51 inches wide and 65.07 inches tall.
Inside, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell will have the similar design as the standard GLC. It means nicely designed, cozy and well-equipped cabin. However, we will notice some changes as well. Firstly, the rear seats will be positioned a bit higher and there will be different design of the cargo floor because of the hydrogen tanks. Secondly, the dashboard will be revised and will feature the larger displays. So, on the center of the dash will be placed a new 10.25-inch touchscreen with infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Release date and price
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLC F-Cell should arrive sometime during 2019, most likely in the end of the year. As for the pricing, the standard model costs somewhere between $39,000 and $41,000. However, the price of the F-Cell model is expected to be much pricier, at least around $55,000.
