Toyota Prius is perhaps one of the most recognizable hybrids on the road, and now the slightly expensive and generally improved version is soon coming to the market. It is the 2018 Toyota Prius Prime. The new Prius Prime is a plug-in hybrid which means that it will be able to go all-electric only and it will work as the standard hybrid vehicle.
Compared to the standard Prius, the upcoming Prius Prime will bring more tech features and improved and larger touchscreen. The fuel efficiency will be better as well so as the all-electric range. The safety equipment will be on the high level also. The new Prius will be available in three trim levels. Those are Plus, Premium and Advanced. The Plus trim is in fact the base version and offers the same equipment as the standard Toyota Prius except the engine. Its main competitors will be Hyundai Sonata Plug-In Hybrid, Chevy Bolt RV, Ford Fusion Energi and Chevrolet Volt.
2018 Toyota Prius Prime engine and performance
The 2018 Toyota Prius Prime will use the same traditional gasoline engine found in standard Prius. It is a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder unit combined with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery. All together they will be able to produce 121 horsepower. The all-electric range of this unit will be around 25 miles and it could go up to 30 miles. Still the Chevrolet Bolt is the leader in this segment with the range of 53 miles. As for the efficiency, it gets around 124 MPGe.
Design of exterior and interior
When it comes to exterior design, the 2018 Toyota Prius Prime will keep the same body shape and looks of the standard Prius but it will receive many adjustments both on front and rear fascias. So, the upcoming Prius Prime will look more modern, more handsome and attractive. The front end will receive more aggressive appearance with slim and narrow headlamps and large air intakes. The rear fascia gets unique design of the taillights and lots of curves and edges. All the lights will be equipped with quality LED lighting.
Inside, the 2018 Toyota Prius Prime is able to welcome up to four passengers. The rear seats can welcome two adults comfortably with sufficient head and leg room. The materials used in its design combine soft-touch surfaces and plastics. The seats are upholstered in cloth and the front ones are heated as well. Furthermore, the dashboard will feature a large 11.6-inch touchscreen with infotainment system.
As for the equipment, the base model gets almost the same features as the standard Prius including heated mirrors, navigation etc. Moving to the Premium version, there will be more comfort, 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, Volvo Sensus system and so on. The top trim will arrive with heated steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, climate control etc. The safety systems will include a rearview camera, forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams and automatic emergency braking.
Release date and price
The 2018 Toyota Prius Prime should enter the showrooms later this year. As for the price, there is still no official information, but we assume that it should start at around $27,000.
