2018 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell: Specs, Price, Design

The Japanese car maker Toyota is once again preparing to reveal its new 2018 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell. This midsize sedan represents one of the first hydrogen fuel-cell cars made for the masses. However, its sale is limited for certain countries only; precisely in California, Japan and in Europe. Dimensionally, it is almost the same size as the Camry model, but inside, the Mirai can only welcome up to four passengers.

As the 2017 model year, the Toyota Mirai has been upgraded with more safety systems such as adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking. As well, it has also gotten an upgraded version of the Entune infotainment system with navigation. Visually, the new Toyota will keep the same styling of the 2016 model year when it has been slightly refreshed. So, for a mid-cycle refresh and more upgrades, we will have to wait for the year of 2019 or even 2020.

The main rivals of the Mirai fuel-cell will be Hyundai Tucson fuel cell, Honda Clarity, BMW 330e iPerformance, Toyota Prius and Chevy Bolt EV.

When it comes to the engine department, the 2018 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell is powered with a hydrogen fuel cell system under its hood. This powertrain is able to develop around 153 horses. Its range is estimated to be up to 312 miles. As for the fuel economy, it gets 67 MPGe combined. The top speed which this system can provide is 110 mph. Furthermore, the Company offers free refueling for three years. The refueling takes around 5 minutes only. It will be able to hit 60 mph in around 9.4 seconds.

Design of exterior and interior

Speaking of the exterior, the newest 2018 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell won’t feature any changes since it is a still good-looking and competitive. This means that the upcoming Toyota will keep with the same design as the current model. The whole body looks futuristic and very unique with sharp edges and angular lines. The front fascia is dominated by the thin, black grille and a pair of narrow LED headlamps. Bellow the grille, we will notice large air intakes with chrome details. On the rear, there will be triangular taillights and more pronounced bumper. The new Mirai will most likely ride on 17-inch wheels.

As for the interior of the 2018 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell, it will be the same as for the exterior. The upcoming Toyota will keep with the same design as its predecessor. The cabin is able to accommodate four passengers which is a surprise since the other models in the class, mostly offer five-seating configuration. The dashboard features touchscreen with latest Entune infotainment system and navigation. There will also be Bluetooth, climate control, satellite radio, GPS system and so on. The safety will be on the highest level. Some of the features included will be pre-collision system, lane departure warning, airbags, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking etc.

Release date and price

Unfortunately, there is still no information when the 2018 Toyota Mirai fuel-cell will go on sale. Its starting price should be around $ 57,500.
