2018 VW Golf GTE: Review, Price, Specs

The Volkswagen car maker has announced its all new hybrid hatchback. We are talking about the upcoming 2018 VW Golf GTE. This model uses a plug-in hybrid unit under its hood and it will show excellent performance and more important great fuel efficiency also. Visually, the future Golf GTE won’t distinguish much from the standard model. However, in order to differ from the rest of the versions in the lineup, the new VW Golf GTE will feature some interesting and unique details.

Furthermore, the car maker has added more tech features this time and there will be more to come too. Inside, the cabin will be very similar to rest of the models in Golf lineup. However, this time we will notice new upholstery.

Its key rivals will be Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, Audi A3 e-tron and Kia Optima PHEV.

The 2018 VW Golf GTE will feature a plug-in hybrid unit under its hood. It is a 1.4-liter 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine with direct injection. This engine will be combined with an electric motor of 75 kWh and a lithium-ion battery placed under the floor. All together, they will be able to produce up to 140-150 horsepower. The engine will pair with a 6-speed dual clutch automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive system will be standard. The top speed of this unit will be limited to 138 mpg and it will be able to hit 60 mph in 7.6 seconds. The fuel economy is estimated to be 166 mpg. Furthermore, an all-electric range will be around 31 miles.

Design of exterior and interior

When it comes to exterior design, the 2018 VW Golf GTE will look handsome, sporty and nicely sculpted. The whole design will be similar to the GTI model but it will of course feature unique details. The front end will receive a radiator honeycomb grille with blue details on the lower part and blue GTE sign. The headlamps will be slightly refreshed and will get standard LED lights. The front bumper will be new as well which will feature integrated C-shaped daytime running lights. On the rear end, we will notice revised LED taillights and twin tailpipes placed on the left end of the vehicle.

Speaking of the interior, despite the fact that it is a hatchback, the 2018 VW Golf GTE will offer sufficiently spacious cabin. So, there will be generous head and leg room even for the rear passengers. However, the most noticeable change will be the new blue tartan upholstery. As well, the dashboard will feature an 8-inch touchscreen with upgraded infotainment system. As for the safety, it will come standard with a rearview camera, cruise control, ABS, multi-collision brake, seven airbags etc. Furthermore, the blind spot monitor, lane assist and adaptive cruise control will most likely be optional.

Release date and price

The 2018 VW Golf GTE is expected to go on sale sometime in the middle of 2018. Speaking of the price, it is estimated to be around $53,000.
