Alongside the standard Highlander model, the Japanese car maker will launch the hybrid version of this model. The 2017 model year has been refreshed so the upcoming 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid should arrive with many changes. The Highlander is a very spacious midsize crossover SUV which is placed between smaller RAV4 and the larger Sequoia model. The standard version offers three types of engines under its hood while the hybrid drivetrain will be available as well. The Highlander hybrid will show great fuel efficiency and solid performance. The cabin is very roomy offering seating for up to eight passengers. It is also equipped with modern safety systems.
While the standard version will be available in six different trims, the Hybrid version will be offered in: LE, XLE and Limited trim levels. Its main rivals will include Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, Chevy Traverse, Nissan Pathfinder and VW Atlas.
2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid engine and performance
Under the hood of the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid,we will see a hybrid engine. This will be a combination of a 3.5-liter V-6 and two electric motors. There will also be a nickel-metal hydride battery of 45 kWh. The total output of this unit will be 306 horsepower and 300 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid version will only be available with all-wheel drive system. The engine will pair with a continuously variable transmission. As or the fuel economy, it gets 30 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The maximum towing capacity of the Toyota Highlander will be 3,500 pounds.
On the other hand, the Highlander will also be available with traditional engines. The base will be a 2.7-liter inline-4 with the output of 185 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. The next one will be a 3.5-liter V-6 which is able to develop 295 horses and the torque of 263 pound-feet. However, these drivetrains won’t be as fuel efficient as the hybrid model.
Design of exterior and interior
When it comes to exterior design, the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid will get the same design as the standard model. So, it means that for the 2018 model year we won’t see any significant changes. The front end is sharp and features elongated headlamps and massive grille with chrome slots. The taillights will get LED lighting which will provide more visibility. It will ride on 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels.
The cabin of the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid will be very spacious; it will have three rows of seats and will be able to welcome up to eight passengers. The third row will be able to fold -flat for more cargo space which is generally very ample. On the center of the dashboard, there will be a standard 4.2-inch touchscreen with infotainment while the higher trims will get larger an 8.0-inch display.
Some of the standard equipment will include five USB ports, Bluetooth, keyless entry, audio system and so on. The blind spot monitor, three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery etc will be available too.
Release date and price
The 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid should arrive later this year. Its price should start at around $37,000.
