The Tesla’s Model S has been on a market for 5 years, and now they are planning to introduce the all-new 2018 Tesla Model S. This iconic vehicle is an all-electric sports sedan which has the range of up to 337 miles which is pretty good. It provides quick acceleration as well. Generally, the Model S is one of the most popular electric vehicles on the road worldwide. It represents the brand’s flagship vehicle and it stands above the latest Model 3 sedan. It also offers autopilot semi-autonomous driving system. Of course, with the features like this, it comes with the higher price.
So, for the 2018 model year, we can expect changes in the engine department, where the Tesla Model S should arrive with a new base engine, precisely instead of the 60kWh one it will use the stronger 75 kWh drivetrain. As well, the Company should also add upgraded semi-autonomous self-driving system and the equipment should be enhanced too.
Its main rivals on the market will include Nissan Leaf, Chevrolet Bolt EV, Hyundai Ioniq Electric and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
2018 Tesla Model S engine, performance, range
When it comes to the engine, the 2018 Tesla Model S will feature some changes compared to the current model. The manufacturer will now replace the current 60 kWh powertrain with the 75 kWh unit as the base. Of course, it will be available with a stronger unit too. The current 90 kWh engine will now be dropped in a favor of stronger 100 kWh engine.
So, the base model will use two electric motors placed one on the front the other on the rear axle which will use the battery of 4 kWh. The total output of this unit will be 518 horsepower and will offer the range of 259 miles. The mid-range will use the same two electric motors and a battery of 100 kWh which will provide the range of 335 miles. The most powerful will be the same 100 kWh battery pack and two more powerful electric motors. The total output of this unit will be 680 hp and the torque of 791 pound-feet. The all-electric range will be 315 miles. All the engines will pair with a one-speed transmission and all-wheel drive will be standard. As for the acceleration, the most powerful unit will be able to hit 60 mph in only 2.3 seconds.
Speaking of the charging time, with the charger of 75 kWh, it takes around 3 hours for 100 miles of drive. With a stronger 100 kWh charger, it takes around 2 hours for the same 100 miles.
Design of exterior and interior
When it comes to exterior design, the 2018 Tesla Model S should feature the same design as the current model which is very attractive, handsome and bold.
Inside the cabin, the 2018 Tesla Model S will offer sufficiently spacious cabin although the rear passengers might lack in headroom a bit. The dashboard will feature the standard 17.0-inch touchscreen with navigation. The standard equipment will include two USB ports, LED interior ambient lighting, heated front seats, a Wi-Fi hotspot, LED fog lights and so on. With the Premium Upgrade Package, you will also get an audio system with 11 speakers, satellite radio, air filtration system, heated rear seats and heated steering wheel. The semi-autonomous self-driving capability will be optional.
Release date and price
The 2018 Tesla Model S should arrive sometime next year. As for the price, we assume that it should be slightly higher than the price of the current model.
