The Chevrolet Malibu is an attractive sedan which takes the second place in the lineup considering its size and price. It stands between the larger Impala and smaller Cruze model. As well, it is the brand’s only electrified sedan in the offer for now. The 2018 Chevy Malibu has already been presented worldwide with some minor changes including new exterior color called Sandy Ridge Metallic. However, the newest 2019 version has also been spotted during its testing. Based on the amount of the camouflage wearing, we assume that this time we can expect a mid-cycle refresh. As well, it will also be offered with a hybrid drivetrain once again and this time we are talking about the newest 2019 Chevy Malibu Hybrid.
So, the 2019 Malibu will bring changes in exterior design making it look more attractive and competitive. Under the hood, we assume that there won’t be any adjustments neither for the traditional or hybrid powertrain. Furthermore, the cabin will most likely remain unchanged.
Its main competitors on the market will be Honda Accord Hybrid, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, Kia Optima Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Ford Fusion Hybrid.
2019 Chevy Malibu Hybrid engine and performance
Under the hood of the newest 2019 Chevy Malibu Hybrid will be placed the same engine as in its predecessor. It is a 1.8-liter inline-4 which can make 122 hp and 130 pound-feet of torque and two electric motors. There will also be a lithium-ion battery of 1.5 kWh. The total output of this powertrain will be 182 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The engine will pair with a continuously variable transmission. The front-wheel-drive configuration will be standard. Furthermore, it will be able to hit 60 mph in around 7.5 seconds. As for the fuel economy, it gets 19 mpg in the city and 43 mpg on the highway.
Besides the hybrid unit, the Malibu will also be available with traditional engines. Those will be a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with 160 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque and optional 2.0-liter turbo-4 rated at 250 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque.
Design of exterior and interior
Speaking of the exterior, the Chevy Malibu is an attractive sedan with handsome twin grille design and narrow LED headlamps on the front and nicely sculpted rear fascia. However, the 2019 Chevy Malibu Hybrid will now feature slightly revised exterior styling. Based on the position of the camouflage, we assume that it will get most of the changes on the front. Those will include a lower grille and air intakes. As well, there should also be reshaped fog lights and side vents too.
The interior of the 2019 Chevy Malibu Hybrid will be sufficiently roomy, well-equipped and comfortable. It is able to welcome up to five passengers. The cargo space is a bit tight especially in the hybrid model offering 11.6 cubic feet of space. The dashboard will feature a 7.0-inch touchscreen with the infotainment system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. As for the equipment, it comes standard with an audio system, power windows and locks, cruise control, 16-inch alloy wheels, a rearview camera and Bluetooth.
Release date and price
The 2019 Chevy Malibu Hybrid should arrive sometime during this year, most likely in the first half of 2018. As for the pricing, we assume that it should be similar to the price of the current model, perhaps it could be slightly higher.
