The better and more efficient version of the Toyota’s Prius model has already been presented to the world. It is the Toyota Prius Prime model which features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, similar to the ones offered in the Chevy Volt and Ford Fusion Energi. The Prius Prime differs from the standard Prius not only under the hood but also visually. This model was completely new for 2017 when it has been fully revised in the exterior and interior design and with the new platform. So, the 2018 model year has arrived mostly unchanged. However, the carmaker has also announced the newest version of its popular plug-in hybrid which should arrive in the market as the 2019 Toyota Prius Prime.
The upcoming 2019 Prius Prime should arrive pretty much the same as the current model. Perhaps it might get some changes including equipment but definitively nothing major. Furthermore, it is expected to arrive in the same trims as before. Those include Prius Prime Plus, Premium, and Advanced models. Its key competitors on the market will be Chevrolet Volt, Hyundai Ioniq, Ford C-Max, Audi A3 Sportback e-tron and Kia Niro.
2019 Toyota Prius Prime powertrain and performance
The new 2019 Toyota Prius Prime will most likely feature the same engine as its predecessor. It is a plug-in hybrid engine. This unit combines a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine and an electric motor of 53 kWh. The gasoline engine has the output of 95 hp and 105 pound-feet of torque while an electric motor can make 71 hp and 120 pound-feet of torque. All together they will be able to make around 121 horses. There will also be a battery of 8.8 kWh which will provide an all-electric range of around 25 miles.
Furthermore, with the use of the standard household outlet, it takes around five and a half hours to fully recharge it. The engine will pair with a continuously variable transmission. Its top speed will be limited to 101 mph and it will be able to hit 60 mph in 10.2 seconds. As for the fuel efficiency, it gets 55/53/54 mpg in the city/highway/combined and 133 MPGe.
Design of exterior and interior
When it comes to exterior design, the 2019 Toyota Prius Prime will arrive pretty much unchanged compared to the current model. The Prius Prime looks very handsome, modern and attractive. The front end is dominated by narrow and slim Quad-LED headlamps and sharp lines on the hood. The fog lights will also be available with LED lighting while the taillights will get standard LED lights.
The interior of the 2019 Toyota Prius Prime will be cozy, well-equipped and very pleasant. The dashboard will feature a standard 11.6-inch touchscreen with the infotainment system. The Plus trim is the base model and comes with similar equipment as the standard Prius. The Premium trim will add more convenience features and will provide more comfort. The top-ranking Advanced will include more safety systems and more luxurious cabin.
Release date and price
The manufacturer still hasn’t confirmed when exactly the 2019 Toyota Prius Prime will go on sale. The price should be similar to the one of the 2018 model year which starts at roughly $30,000.
