The entire automobile industry is changing its course. Since global warming becomes a major concern the necessity for the reduction of driving emissions increases every day. Now, all the big players start to “think green” and develop their new business strategy.
Mercedes-Benz has presented its new “Concept EQ” at the Paris Motor Show. The name EQ should present new “Electric Intelligence”. However, judging by the latest announcement of Markus Schafer, member of the divisional board for production and supply chain, they will not stop here. Until the year 2022 Mercedes-Benz plans to present 10 brand new full-electric models, from the Smart ForTwo seater to the large SUVs. To reach this target, the future models will be produced at six factories across Germany, France, the USA, and China.
Also, aside from new models, Mr. Schafer emphasized the importance of the batteries since they are the most important part of an electric vehicle. The goal is to produce them in their own factories. In that manner, Mercedes-Benz sets itself in a great position ensuring the optimal supply of production.
Mercedes-Benz EV – Design
After the debut of the EQ concept, the direction to which design of the new Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles will go can be assumed. It is clear that the new EV will be recognizable and this sports SUV coupé is a preview of new revolutionary lines. Observing the new EQ concept with its gleaming black hood and blue lights it feels like the future is already here. To quote Mr. Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG: “Its fascination lies in a reinterpretation of our design philosophy of sensual purity, the aim being to create an avant-garde, contemporary and distinctive electro-look. At the same time, the design of the visionary show car, which has been reduced to the essentials, reveals an alluring progressivity.”
Like the design, the interior of the new EV will also be something new. Standard switches and knobs will be neglected. Instead, the intuitive touch-screen interfaces will do all the necessary job which will result in more comfort and functionality. The wide-touchscreen will be equipped with 3D real-time map from HERE and Intelligent Driver Assistance. Complete inside will be illuminated by ambient lighting that automatically adjusts to driver’s activity.
The new business strategy of the Mercedes-Benz will not give accent only on a revolutionary design. Looking at the EQ concept it is clear that the performances of the future EV will be very important. This sport SUV arrives with the power of 300 kW (402 horsepower). These outputs will be delivered with the help of two electric motors. Allegedly, this powertrain can lead the new model from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. With the help of the scalable battery components, it should reach 300 miles on a single charge.
Production of the Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles will start with the new mid-sized EQC SUV. This model will be manufactured in facilities in Bremen, Germany. It is expected to be on the production line from the beginning of 2019.
