The Volvo Company and its owner Geely have created the new sub-brand named Polestar which is mainly focused on building the sports car. However, they have decided that this brand will primarily build electric cars. Of course, the Volvo Company is also planning to create its own electric vehicles and not just leave it to Polestar brand. The first and limited-edition vehicle will be Polestar 1. It is a hybrid, and the rest of the lineup will be EV only. However, the Polestar 2 will be an all-electric car which shall make its premiere sometime during 2019.
So, the first electric vehicle which Volvo will make is the hatchback and will be based on the next-generation V40 compact hatchback.
The Polestar’s first car debuted in Shanghai
The Polestar sub-brand has recently revealed their first vehicle which is a high-performance hatchback. However, this car won’t be the fully electric vehicle but a hybrid version. And the rest of the lineup will get an all-electric drivetrain.
The Volvo’s newest hatchback will be powered by a hybrid engine. This unit will combine a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder petrol engine and two electric motors. The petrol unit will be able to develop up to 377 horses and will send power to front wheels. On the other hand, the electric motors will drive the rear wheels and can produce 215 horsepower. The total output of this unit will be up to 600 horses and 737 pound-feet of torque which is really amazing. An all-electric range of this unit will be around 93 miles which means that it will have the longest range of any other hybrid vehicle.
Platform and exterior design
The upcoming Polestar 1 EV hatchback will be built on the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform which will also underpin the future electric vehicles. It is the smaller version of the SPA (Scalable Product Architecture). This model will be based on the Volvo 40.2 Concept which has been presented to the world back in 2016. So, the upcoming compact hatchback will feature an aggressive styling with sharp edges and straight lines. The front end should receive the same Thor’s Hammer LED headlamps and wide black grille. Furthermore, the rear end will be dominated by the unique C-shaped tail lamps.
Release date and price of the Polestar 1
The production of the newest Polestar 1 hatchback should start sometime in the middle of 2019 and there will be just 500 examples of this model. It will be made in China in Chengdu where is found the largest market for EVs. Its price should be in a range from around $182,000 to $210,000.
The upcoming Polestar EVs in the lineup
After the release of the Polestar 1, the carmaker will present the Polestar 2 which will be an all-electric car. Its production will most likely start at the end of 2019 and its key competitor will be Tesla Model 3. Then will appear Polestar 3 which will be slightly larger than the compact Polestar 2 and it will be an SUV. Furthermore, the Company will offer them with at least two sizes of the battery. They will differ in range, performance and naturally, price.
