The Nissan Leaf is one of the best-selling electric vehicles in Europe and was first presented to the world back in 2010. So, after being on the market for quite some time, the carmaker has decided to improve it in order to stay competitive with other electric cars which are constantly getting more and more popular. Therefore, the Japanese carmaker has given it a much needed redesigned and developed the second generation of this model which has entered the market as the 2018 model year. However, with all the improvements, in every segment, the Leaf still hasn’t gotten enough power and efficiency so it can stands close the new Chevy Bolt or Tesla Model 3.
However, it appears that this would change and the Nissan Company is working on the new 2019 Nissan Leaf which should be more powerful than ever. According to the latest news, the Leaf EV will now deliver the range of more than 200 miles.
The upcoming Nissan Leaf will arrive with the same design and upgrades of the second-gen 2018 model year. Its styling is all-new now with more conventional and more handsome appearance. As well its size has been slightly increased. The interior has also been revised and it is much nicer now. Moreover, there are more tech features, especially on the safety front. As for the engine, the range has also been much improved to around 40 percent, but for even better range, now we can expect the future 2019 Nissan Leaf.
So, the 2019 model year will represent the longer range version which will be able to offer the range of up to 225 miles on a single charge. It will feature a new, more powerful battery pack and the Leaf will be able to use a DC fast-charger of 100 kWh. With all these improvements, the Nissan Leaf will easily be able to compete against Tesla Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt. Furthermore, the new Leaf EV will continue to be available in three trim levels which will include the base S, SV, and the range-topping SL versions. As well, according to the latest reports, the carmaker should also launch the Nismo version of its popular hatchback.
Engine and performance of the 2019 Nissan Leaf
The 2019 Nissan Leaf should be significantly more powerful than before. It is expected to get a 160 kWh electric motor and a larger battery pack of 60 kWh. Thanks to the more powerful battery, the new Leaf should provide the range of even 225 miles. As well, this battery should feature a thermal management system too. So, with all these changes, the new Nissan will be more powerful, will provide more range and fast charging also.
On the other hand, the carmaker hasn’t revealed the specifications of the Nismo version. So, the Leaf Nismo could use the same unit as the standard version. Or, perhaps it could get an even stronger engine. Al in all, this information still needs to be confirmed.
Design of exterior and interior
The 2019 Nissan Leaf will carry over the same look of the current model which has been heavily refreshed. It now looks more conventional with slopping roofline and new design of the front fascia. It features narrower LED headlamps which are positioned lower and a V-motion chrome grille. The Nismo version will receive larger wheels, more aggressive side skirts and red details on the mirror caps. On the rear, it sports a redesigned roof spoiler.
Speaking of the interior, it will be the same. The 2019 Nissan Leaf will get the same styling and upgrades of the 2018 model year. The materials and surfaces inside the cabin are more quality and nicer. The dashboard has also been revised and features a 5.0-inch touchscreen on the base model, while on the SV and SL trims it will receive a larger 7.0-inch display. As well, the S and SV version will get cloth upholstery while the SL will receive leather. It seats five as before and the rear seats can be folded down for extra cargo space. The Nismo version will feature sportier front seats and red stitching on the doors and seats.
The base trim level comes standard with 16-inch wheels, audio system with 4 speakers, Bluetooth, USB, and an AM/FM/satellite radio. The SV will add 17-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, audio with 6 speakers and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The range-topping will include leather upholstery, Bose audio, a cargo cover, turn signals in the door mirrors and a surround-view camera system.
Release date and price
The 2019 Nissan Leaf should arrive in late 2018. The price is expected to be slightly higher than the price of the current model.
