Introduced last year, the Kia Niro has become very popular in its class. It is available with a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid, however, the carmaker has also announced an electric version of this model which will enter the market as the 2019 Kia Niro EV. On the other hand, the hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are now available as the second model year and according to the latest reports, we are about to see the newest versions. So, this time, we will review the upcoming 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid.
The Niro is a family-oriented compact hatchback wagon which is known for its impressive fuel economy and excellent safety ratings. It looks very stylish too and the interior is very pleasant, high quality and well-equipped. It is also fun to drive and for those who are a bit budget-limited, the Niro is available with a reasonable price. Unfortunately, it is not available with an all-wheel-drive system. The hybrid model will be available in several trim levels just like the current model and those are the base FE, mid-range LX and EX versions and the top-range Touring trims. They will differ in equipment and estimated fuel consumption.
2019 Kia Niro Hybrid powertrain
The 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid will use the same engine as the 2018 model year. This hybrid engine combines a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder unit with an electric motor and a lithium-ion polymer battery pack. The total output of this unit is 139 horses and 195 pound-feet of torque. The power is sent to front wheels and the engine works with a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The fuel consumption in the FE version is 52 mpg in the city and 49 mpg on the highway. The EX and LX versions get 51/46 mpg while the Touring trim it is rated at 46/40 mpg in the city/highway.
Exterior and interior styling
Looking from the outside, the 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid will keep the same shape and design of the current model. It is well-proportioned and features a rugged appearance. The Niro looks handsome with its rounded and long hood and the swept-back headlamps. The base model rides on 16-inch wheels while the Touring trim is equipped with the larger 18-inch alloys.
Generally, the cabin of the Niro is one of the best in its class. The 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid will receive the same interior design and equipment as the 2018 Niro. The design of the cabin is simple, clean and well-organized. All the seats are very comfortable and there is plenty of head and legroom even in the rear seats. With the 60/40 split-folding second row, the Niro offers valuable cargo space. Furthermore, depending on a trim level, the dashboard gets a 7.0-inch or an 8.0-inch touchscreen.
All the models come standard with LED headlamps, dual-zone climate control, a rearview camera, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and so on. The mid-range trims will add blind-spot alerts, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, USB, glossy black trim, folding heated door mirrors etc. The range-topping version will also include a premium Harman Kardon audio with 8 speakers, leather upholstery, front and rear parking sensors and many other more.
Release date and price
The 2019 Kia Niro Hybrid might arrive in late 2018 or early 2019. The price will probably remain the same and it starts at around $24,000.
