The Toyota Mirai is the brand’s only vehicle powered by a hydrogen powertrain and zero-emission car. It provides better range compared to the other electric cars, and it provides a quiet ride. However, although it is about the same size as the Camry, the Mirai only seats four. As well, some find its design not as attractive as the other vehicles in the Toyota’s lineup and the fuel availability is limited. Furthermore, it is only available in Japan, North America, and Europe. The 2018 model year has just arrived at the market and it hasn’t changed much from the previous version. However, the newest 2019 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Hybrid is expected to undergo a mid-cycle refresh and to bring several important upgrades.
First of all, according to the newest reports, the upcoming Mirai should be less expensive than the current model. So, it is going to be available for those with a limited budget too. Moreover, this time, it could arrive with smaller dimensions and should feature some mild styling tweaks.
The main rivals of the Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell will remain Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell, Toyota Prius, Chevy Bolt EV, Honda Clarity, and BMW 330e iPerformance.
Engine and performance of the 2019 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Hybrid
It is not yet confirmed, but the upcoming 2019 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Hybrid should be powered by the same unit the 2018 model year. It uses a 114 kWh fuel cell engine which combines hydrogen from the tank placed under the rear seats, water, and an oxygen from the air. This unit has the output of 153 horses and the power is sent to front wheels. There is also a nickel-metal-hydride hybrid battery of 1.6 kWh which give an extra energy when needed more acceleration. This unit is able to go from 0 to 60 mph in around 9 seconds. On one full tank of hydrogen, the Toyota Mirai is able to go up to 312 miles.
Design of exterior and interior
The newest 2019 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Hybrid is expected to arrive slightly smaller than the current model. When it comes to exterior, its design should be slightly refreshed in order to look more attractive and eye-catching. Unfortunately, the carmaker hasn’t said precisely what changes we can expect. But we assume that it might get revised grille, lights, and bumpers.
Inside the cabin, the 2019 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Hybrid will be able to accommodate four passengers as before, although it might get a bit crowded because of the smaller dimensions. All the seats are comfortable and the front ones are heated too. They are covered in premium synthetics.
As for the equipment, it comes standard with climate control, power windows, door mirrors, and locks, navigation, a premium audio system and so on. In the safety department, it includes a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and so on.
Release date and price
The 2019 Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Hybrid should arrive sometime during next year. However, compared to the current version, it is going to be cheaper.
